Falkland Islands

Posted in Travel Falkland Islands  by Discovery Falklands on April 29th, 2011

Stopped for two quick days in the Falkland Islands on my way across the South Atlantic. This was my second time here, and I was glad to see it again. I found the baby birds (penguins and albatrosses especially) to be so thrilling.

What is Bristol famous for?

Posted in Falkland Islands News  by Discovery Falklands on April 25th, 2011

Britain has sixty six cities in total – some are small and quaint, others are massive and mesmerising. But out-with the four main capitals, many of the UK’s finest conurbations seem to escape the sort of praise that the likes of London and Edinburgh receive.

Some would say, however, that this is a good thing as it means less crowds of tourists and the inevitable ‘tourist tax’ this brings. Whichever way you look at it though, Britain certainly has a wealth of cities worth visiting, and what better place to start than Bristol, the South-West’s most populous city.

As a finalist in the European Capital of Culture (2008), Bristol is gem of a city with a history that goes back as far as the eleventh century. But for those unfamiliar with the delights on offer in Bristol, what exactly is the city famous for?

Well, firstly, one of the main appeals of Bristol is its stunning harbour setting on the banks of the River Avon, whilst its compact layout makes it a great place for a short city-break. Crucially, Bristol’s location very much works in its favour – not only is it close to the sea, but it’s also a short commute from two capital cities. Both London and Cardiff are only a couple of hours away, whilst Bristol International airport also connects the city with a number of key hubs across the UK and Europe.

Accessibility aside, Bristol offers plenty for people of all ages to do. And at certain times of the year, the city’s a hotspot for outdoor activities.

Each June, one of the country’s largest free ‘non-competitive’ cycling events happens in Bristol, and the event is now nearing its twentieth year. ‘Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride’ offers a fantastic opportunity for people from all backgrounds and abilities to not only participate in a fun activity, but it also allows visitors to explore the countryside and the city itself. Routes range from about 9 to 38 miles, so you can take your pick.

If you prefer bridges to bikes, then look no further than the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, which is perhaps Bristol’s most iconic edifice, recognisable by its silhouette alone. Whilst a wander across the bridge offers stunning views across the city and the gorge below, it also has a fantastic visitors’ centre that gives great insight into the building of the bridge with numerous artefacts and displays.

Bristol’s next most famous offering is probably the Brunel’s SS Great Britain. The maritime masterpiece was built and launched from the city’s shores in the 19th century and it was the world’s first propeller-driven iron ship.

The ship was left to rust off the Falkland Islands in the 1930s but was eventually saved in the 1970s, and was towed back to Bristol where it was restored to its former glory. In 2006, the SS Great Britain won the prestigious Gulbenkian prize for ‘Museum of the Year’.

Today, visitors can experience what life was like for Victorian passengers and crew on what is one of the world’s most famous ships.

There’s plenty to do in this fantastic city, which means you’ll probably want a comfortable Bristol hotel to rest your weary head after a hard day’s touring. And the good news is, there are plenty of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets.
