THE FALKLANDS WAR – 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 20th, 2011

DISC ONE – GOOSE GREEN 1982 The fight at Goose Green in May 1982 was the most famous battle of the Falklands War, which saw British and Argentine troops struggle for control of the Falkland Islands. In the wake of the shock Argentine invasion, Britain sent a hastily assembled Task Force to the South Atlantic charged with the job of restoring British sovereignty. The Argentine positions at Goose Green were thought to pose a threat to the British advance across the Islands and troops from the Parachute Regiment were sent to deal with it. After 12 hours of bloody fighting, the Argentine position was finally overrun and the British advance on the capital Port Stanley could continue. Moving pictures were beamed back to Britain of the aftermath of the battle, bringing home the stark realities of combat – a sobering reminder amid the political rhetoric and jingoism. DISC TWO – THE FALL OF PORT STANLEY June 1982 saw the final battles of the Falklands War. For the servicemen of the British Task Force, the campaign to defeat a determined enemy had been difficult and costly, but now the capital Stanley, the final prize, lay within their grasp. This programme tells the story of the drive to liberate Stanley, during which battles such as those at Tumbledown and Mount Longdon found their way into the pages of British military history. Featuring computer animated 3D graphics that clearly illustrate strategy, tactics and the ebb and flow of the battles, the programme draws on extensive

Seria lindo de su parte si lo vieran con la canción original, tiene un link en las antaciones icon smile Hetamerica The Call Argentina centric because we are the best! Well, not really, its because its my first Anime slideshow, and I wanted to do it for my country icon smile Hetamerica The Call Besides, argentinean history is the one I know the most, obviously. But there is plenty of other countries too! Descriptions, tags, references and labels with country names will be added later, Im kinda running out of time right now. Please, before making any question about artist and songs see the credits at the end.(a beautiful songs awaits for those who see them icon biggrin Hetamerica The Call ) This are not canon character, all of them are fanmade, USA and UK are OCs. Notes: South Georgia Island, with South Sandwich Island, are part of the british overseas territory that Argentina claims along with the Falkland Islands. Another note: The Patagonia IS part of Argentina, but here is represented as another character because, in the beginning, it was dominated by the indian people and it took a lot of time (and blood, indian blood) till it was completely under the government control, besides its has a kind of different culture and traditions. Its like what happens with Arthur in canon, He represents the United Kingdom to the world, but between his siblings (who have not appeared yet) he is only England (rememeber that in

“Antarctica – Getting there is half the fun” Cliffanddoris’s photos around Antarctic Peninsula

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 17th, 2011

Preview of Cliffanddoris’s blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica Entry Title: “Antarctica – Getting there is half the fun!” Entry: “Antarctica has been on our ‘hit list’ and we finally made it! Friggin incredible! We spent 21 days visiting the Antarctica Peninsula, South Georgia Island and Falkland Islands and then spent a couple of days at Iguazu Falls. This entry covers the Beginning: Ushuaia, the Drake Passage and making sure we didn’t get sick! We hope you enjoy as much as we did! Antarctica had been on our “hit list” for a few years but we never thought that we’d really end up traveling there. However, after visiting cities and historical sites throughout Italy, the Mediterranean and Greek Islands last year Doris and I realized that the volume of people traveling outside their home country is increasing exponentially and that “off-season” crowds are rivaling the seasonal crowds. Whether this is the result of globalization or the internet or the aging of our travel population I don’t know. But I do know that there are not many places left in the world that can still be called “remote”. Antarctica is still a remote location. But the number of travelers and ships visiting this remote area of the world has been increasing by 30% each of the past few years. The result is that close to 50000 people will visit

Saint-Malo

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 15th, 2011

The ancient walled city of St-Malo is extremely popular with visitors from all over Europe and in particular the UK. ST-MALO was originally in the Middle Ages a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond. The promontory fort of Alet, south of the modern centre in what’s now the St-Servan district, commanded approaches to the Rance even before the Romans, but modern St-Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded by saints Aaron and Brendan early in the sixth century. In later centuries it became notorious as the home of a fierce breed of pirate-mariners, who were never quite under anybody’s control but their own; for four years from 1590, St-Malo even declared itself to be an independent republic. The corsaires of St-Malo not only forced English ships passing up the Channel to pay tribute, but also brought wealth from further afield. Jacques Cartier, who colonized Canada, lived in and sailed from St-Malo, as did the first colonists to settle the Falklands — hence the islands’ Argentinian name, Las Malvinas, from the French Malouins.
