Entry from: Buenos Aires, Argentina Entry Title: “Buenos Aires” Entry: “Buenos Aires is the tango capital of South America – basically where the tango was born in the 1920s. Thirteen million people inhabit the capital of Argentina, and it is a city of many different districts. BA is considered the richest city in South America, and even in the Southern Hemisphere. People of BA are called people of the port, or ‘portenos’. The President of Argentina resides and works in BA, and it is the home of Evita Peron, the famous wife of President Juan Peron who died in 1974. Evita, for those who don’t know (and there seem to be a few) sang the famous song “Don’t cry for me Argentina” from the balcony of the presidential ‘palace’. Evita died at the age of 30, and both her and her husband were very much loved by the people. Argentina has a had marred political history, with 4 dictators, the last of which was ousted in the mid 1980s. BA is a very politically charged city, with us seeing numerous protests while we were there for our 3 days. The last dictator was not popular, and decided to increase his popularity by invading the Falkland Islands, which at the time was a British Colony (this was in the early 80s). He sent inexperienced soldiers into battle for a 2 month war, and lost more hope in his followers as

My tribute to the Harrier

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 27th, 2011

My tribute to the Harrier. I have used a mixture of footage from air shows and war time. The Harrier’s beginning’s were with the Hawker p.1127 . Design began in 1957 by Sir Sydney Camm , Ralph Hooper and Sir Stanley Hooker of the Bristol engine company. The first vertical take-off was on 21 October 1960. The P.1127 developed into the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel FGA.1. The Kestrel was strictly an evaluation aircraft, and only nine were produced, the first flying on march 7 1964. At the time of the development of the P.1127, Hawker had started on a design for a supersonic version, the Hawker p1154. After this was cancelled in 1965, the RAF began looking at a simple upgrade of the Kestrel as the P.1127(RAF). In mid-1966, the P.1127(RAF) was ordered by the RAF as the Harrier GR.1, with the first preproduction aircraft flying the following year. The Harrier GR.3 featured improved sensors countermeasures and a further upgraded Pegasus Mk 103. This model saw a lot service in the Falklands war mainly for ground attack. Also the BAE Sea Harrier FRS.1 which was mainly for fleet air defence. The Sea Harrier, developed from the GR.3, was important to the naval activities. Twenty Sea Harriers were operated from the carriers HMS Hermes and Invincible . Although they destroyed 21 argentine aircraft in air combat with no loss there were not enough of them to establish complete air superiority and prevent Argentine attacks and daily flights of C-130 Hercules transports to the islands. “54′ South” Bootephant’s photos around Ushuaia, Argentina (province of tierra del fuego)

Entry from: Ushuaia, Argentina Entry Title: “54′ South” Entry: “We were rapidly running out of continent in our journey southwards, but there was one place left to visit before taking a turn to the north — Ushuaia. This is the jumping off point for trips to the Antarctic peninsula and, originally, we had hoped to be amongst those setting sail. However, time and money were against us so this was as far as we were to get….this time… On the way, we stopped at a town called Rio Gallegos, which is famous for nothing – and for good reason! There is little to see or do, but it does have a museum to the Falkland islands. More specifically, it has a museum explaining historically, morally and geologically why they should belong to Argentina and not our good selves. Sadly, it was closed for renovation and so cannot comment further on the strength of their argument! Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, sitting on the Beagle channel. Darwin passed through a few years back and they named the waterway for his boat. Although it hasn’t been inhabited for much above 100 years by us Europeans, it does have a surprisingly interesting history. A huge prison was built here at about the same time as the town’s foundation, taking in murderers and unruly politicians. It’s now a museum, a la Alcatraz, and is

If The Oil Runs Out : 5 of 6

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 22nd, 2011

The demand for energy has risen relentlessly over the last 150 years in line with industrial development and population growth. And as economies of developing countries like China and India continue to grow, it is predicted demand will rise by a further 50% by 2030. President Bush has already warned the United States that it is too reliant on oil, often from “unstable” countries, and that it must find alternatives. Geologists are searching in Arctic Alaska, around the Falkland Islands and under the oceans for the last remaining sizeable reserves of oil. But what will happen if the fuel crisis is not resolved? ____________________ Blending drama and documentary, the IF series returns with a film investigating a scenario many experts fear will come true. When the cheap oil we depend on starts to run out, we may not be able to take anything for granted any more. DRAMA ______ It is 2016 and the world is in crisis. Global supplies of oil cannot keep up with soaring demand and the price of petrol is going through the roof. The oil companies are in a desperate race to find any remaining oil reserves but what happens if there is no more out there? Combining expert interviews with a fictional story line, the drama-documentary examines how our lives will change as the price of fuel starts to spiral out of control. The film interweaves the story of Jess, an exploration geologist working for an international oil company, with the impact of the fuel crisis on her parents back home in

REPUBLICAN THREAT TO FREEDOM – AMERICA AT CROSSROAD (cc)

Posted in Falkland Islands History  by Discovery Falklands on December 22nd, 2011

There is no compromise – Republican or Democrat – the USA is being torn apart. Republicans continue to attack with the ferocity of a blind rabid pit bull. Truth and facts are not as important as victory – If the Republicans were people of honor with a noble agenda then there might be a reason to extend support to them but when the rhetoric has no grounds or basis of fact or reason then they have to be exposed and defeated. music by Matt Milne mattmilne+libertyhealthewounds.mp3 and mattmilne+anepictheme.mp3
