Falklands ‘vulnerable’ without carrier 05.03.12

Posted in Falkland Islands News  by Discovery Falklands on January 24th, 2013

The decision to leave Britain without an aircraft carrier to defend the Falklands could allow Argentina to recapture the south Atlantic territory, the commander of land forces in the 1982 conflict has warned. Former commander of the Royal Marines Major General Julian Thompson said it would be “end of story” if Argentine forces took the British base on East Falkland. He told The Times: “The Argentines have a marine brigade. They’ve got a parachute brigade and some good special forces. “All they’ve got to do is get those guys on to the islands for long enough to destroy the (RAF) Typhoon jets and that’s the end of it.” Maj Gen Thompson added: “You have got to take your own air support with you and you can’t without a carrier. End of story.” Last month Downing Street accused Argentina of pursuing a “policy of confrontation” over the islands, after reports suggested the South American state’s government was calling on companies to stop importing goods from the UK. It marked the latest escalation of the confrontation over the territory as the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War approaches. Tempers flared after Britain announced the deployment of one of its most modern destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the region, although it insisted the move was merely routine. The Duke of Cambridge’s arrival in the Falklands for a posting as an RAF search and rescue pilot further infuriated Buenos Aires.

You have no way of knowing or proving what the argies are planning so your post is just a form of fantasising.

  2. HLecterPHD Says:

Argentina is not planning to invade the Malvinas/Falklands militarily. *
All speculation, and this video, is just a form of fantasizing.

You’ve got to take into account the Argentinian forces as well as those of the United Kingdom.

Whilst the UK’s capability is lagging somewhat at the moment, the situation for Argentina is far worse in regards to kit available and how servicable that kit is.

We shouldn’t start getting worked up about the Falklands until Argentina begins to make key updates to it’s current military especially things like amphibious assault ships and the like.

  4. Jevo365 Says:

I doubt very much that the Admiralty would allow an amphibious Argentinian force to get close enough. An Astute class submarine could deal with any Argentinian fleet alone due to its technological superiority

  5. johnnyfknbee Says:

Argentina won’t try and take them, international pressure would make them think otherwise plus the UK on the UNSC would get backing to retake islands “any means necessary” Argentina knows that the UK have a lot more stronger and advanced military so It wouldn’t! when the carriers are here it will keep people sweet but honestly guys they won’t even try it, the next war will likely be in the middle east!

  6. chaquenito Says:

You just remember “was no pick- nik ”
surrender? next time you will do not have your best allied “general menendez”
If you are in the military ( ex brit’s vet in the Malvinas war) you will undestand
Is just question of time we will meet again in the battlefield
    MALVINAS ARGENTINAS

  7. Juho Lee Says:

No they will not. Britain will be facing massive pressure if it did that, even more than Argentina, if it invaded the Falklands.

  8. YouAreAnIdiotSoThere Says:

‘Argentina has a right to the Malvinas and will pursue it.’ – they have no right whatsoever, never did, never will. There only valid claim is ‘It’s closer to us than to the UK’.

Legally they have no case whatsoever, which is why they have never pursued the legal option in any court system anywhere, ever. Their ‘claim’ would be thrown out of court as laughable.

  9. God killa Says:

Have Agentina managed to replace the guns and shoe laces we took off them in 82 already?

  10. sceett Says:

Haha Brits afraid of the Argies? You must be joking, we’re always chomping at the bit for a scrap! We embarrassed you last time, we would do it again and probably 10x as hard as before just to make sure you get the message and won’t do it again.

  11. Aazerel Says:

Although protecting the 2000 habitats would be taken into account, the main reason the the United Kingdom would defend the Falklands is for the rights to the oil beneath it. The government will use every aspect of military power to keep the Argies from getting their hands on it. If Argentina do decide to attack, there only chance would be to do it before the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth in 2016. Although attacking the Falklands would still be pretty suicide before that date,.

  13. magyar misztikus Says:

that sounds like a slightly insane response to defend an island with 2,000 people.

  14. Karma1062 Says:

One Brit submarine is enough to wipe out all the Agies” naval ships in their own ports and all their airfields. And they will quickly surrender.

  15. xXDanielJamesSimsXx Says:

Why are people saying that latin america will support argentina, as they will be the ones that mount a military operation and if these countries support this action and supply military personnel they will be viewed poorly within the world for agressive behaviour and as brazil depends heavily upon the worlds trade they will deploy troops as eu sanctions will destroy their economy!
This is between britian and argentina no one else will help with military power.

  16. SugarTomAppleRoger Says:

Exactly right. The Argentinians are best to just sit tight. A military operation is non even necessary. A low key operation might work. The two star is correct in saying that a future budget will cut down capability. Also, England may be at war elsewhere. It may take years, but there will be an opportunity. A rapid insertion and offer of a quick surrender would be best. Argentina has a right to the Malvinas and will pursue it.

  17. Dzbrothers Says:

LOL The English are afraid of Argentina

  18. sarahkb7 Says:

People forget the Falklands are islands. A big island-sized aircraft carrier which has a squadron of RAF Typhoons stationed “aboard” it….!

  19. cra1234cor Says:

if the agies were going to have ago, they would have done it by now.there not stupid.it would be a complete waste of time.

  20. locomastero Says:

You are a group of stupid people if you think my country will be even consider go to war with another country, regardless who they are or what military capability they have. We invade the island during a dictatorial goberment, we are a democracy now, in how many wars have argentina been since 1982?, zero, ask the same question to britain… yeah you know the answer. We are not going to war just because some foreing country don’t agree with us….

  21. Minh1110 Says:

that is only when there is a declaration of war. Will Britain declares war with Argentina only because of the Falklands?
