Antarctica cruise on Plancius – Part 1 of 4.wmv

Posted in Travel Falkland Islands  by Discovery Falklands on June 10th, 2011

Taking a small ship expedition cruise to Antarctica is like no other cruise. An Antarctic cruise is an adventure from the beginning. Setting sail from Ushuaia begins the voyage along the Beagle Channel and out onto the Drake Passage. From there you may head south directly to the Antarctic Peninsula or maybe sail east to the Falklands and South Georgia first depending on your itinerary. You’ll see amazing wildlife throughout your cruise including seabirds such as Albatrosses and Petrels, whales and of course penguins. Not only that but you will be treated to the most extraordinary landscapes and seascapes too. Giant icebergs and towering snow covered mountains will greet you each day. You’ll meet a lot of great people too and be well taken care of by the ships crew and staff and be in the capable hands of expert guides for all your landings on the islands and continent itself. The guides will be there to introduce you to the flora and fauna of this wonderland as well as answer any questions you might have. If you are planning to take a trip to Antarctica and want to know how to get there then we would be happy to help. We are Polar Travel Specialist and can arrange your entire trip for you or you may wish to join one of our group trips which are a great success.

To enjoy more of Antarctica, make sure that your cruise goes through these famous tourist spots.

1) Falkland Island Sightseeing

Antarctica: An Overview

Posted in Falkland Islands Travel Guide  by Discovery Falklands on March 17th, 2011

Now that she’s seen Antarctica, this ninety-one year old traveler has seen almost every corner of the earth. Seeing Antarctica with her own two eyes was extremely important to her. It was the first time she’d set eyes on Antarctica, though she’d been in the same region twice previously. According to our tourist, the plane never landed, but they certainly traveled over it. When you would like to get more information on <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=’http://www.auroraexpeditions.com.au/antarctic-cruise.aspx’>antarctic cruises</a> check out this site.  Flying over fjords, glaciers and through mountain passes, the lucky traveler savored Antarctica for four hours. The pilot took the plane down to 300 feet above the ground. Fog covered one of the mountain ranges they passed. They couldn’t have asked for better weather for viewing.  The sun was bright in the sky and it was absolutely clear. The air temperatures were well below freezing.  It was early March, which marks the end of the Antarctic summer. A scientist, based in Antarctica, was able to be both tour guide and lecturer during the flight.  One of the things this lifelong birder really wanted to see was the penguins. She wasn’t able to find any, though her daughter, who was sitting at another window, was able to see some far in the distance. They took a ship which allowed them to visit the Falkland islands, just off the Argentine coast. Hundreds of penguins availed themselves when she took a boat trip to the East Island of the Falklands during that cruise, including Magellan penguins. This is the tallest of all the penguin species.  They flew from the United States for sixteen hours.  Then they left a South American city on the cruise ship. In addition to touring South American ports of call, passengers were invited to take a dip in the ship’s pool. She is now the proud owner of a certificate stating that this ninety-one year old took a swim, even though the air temperature was only thirty five degrees. You can get the best <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=’http://www.auroraexpeditions.com.au/antarctic-cruise.aspx’>antarctic cruise reviews</a> information by visiting this website.  They finally flew into Rio, after having toured Santiago.  The cruise ship docked in Chile. The passengers could not have asked for better weather on their three week cruise. The clearness of the night air allowed all the passengers to see the Southern Cross, the smallest of all constellations.  The ninety-one year-old had visited South America before; she’d cruised the major river and spent time in one of the major cities. Seeing the loss of bird habitat and mess of deforestation around that major river bothered our ninety-one year-old traveler. Her adventures have taken her to Africa where she went on Safari. A previous trip to left Antarctica as the final continent to tour. This recent travel to Antarctica fulfilled the dream of visiting all the continents.

Antarctica Travel Guide

Posted in Falkland Islands Travel Guide  by Discovery Falklands on February 5th, 2011

The ice shelves and mountain ranges in Antarctica make you recognise the enormity of nature and the frailties of human life. To put it very simply, Antarctica is a stunning destination. The continent that is, even today, uninhabited (only scientists and other members at research stations comprise the temporary human inhabitants) leaves you spellbound with its breathtaking natural beauty. Although you’ll feel out of place, for hardly anyone (seals and penguins included) will notice you, more visitors to Antarctica have come thanking they chose this destination over others.

Places to see in Antarctica

Falkland Islands: Spectacular is the word to describe the Falkland Islands, a popular destination amongst Antarctica Cruises. With its vast population of albatrosses, seals and penguins, the Falkland Islands are sure to leave a memorable picture in your mind. Sheep are also abundant and outnumber Falklanders by 200 to 1. Some of the must visit destinations on the Falkland Islands include the Falkland Islands Museum (located in Stanley), Sea Lion Island (you can spot all five species of penguins on Falklands Islands here) and Steeple Jason (home to the world’s largest colony of black – browed albatrosses). You’ll also not want to miss a chance to meet and share a drink with the locals at one of Stanley’s lovely pubs.

Antarctica Cruises

An Antarctic cruise could well be the single most memorable experience of your life. Although Antarctica cruises from Australia and New Zealand are the longest, they are also amongst the most exciting. Cruising to Antarctica involves cruising in all sorts of weathers and temperatures. http://www.travelprojects.com.au offers Antarctica cruises from Australia – find more details on their website.

Having travelled all over the world and tasted the culture and cuisine of almost all major countries, Jack Lyon now resides in Melbourne. These days he likes to tell people about his travels through his articles.

Award Winning Photographer, David Slater, to join Aqua-Firma’s Antarctica, South Georgia & Falklands Wildlife Voyage (6th – 25th Feb, 2011)

Posted in Travel Advice Falkland Islands  by Discovery Falklands on January 29th, 2011

Aqua-Firma is pleased to announce that the Award Winning Wildlife Photographer, David Slater, will be joining their Wildlife and Photography Expedition Voyage to South Georgia, the Antarctica Peninsula and the Falkland Islands next February.  The voyage is undoubtedly one of the ultimate wilderness and wildlife journeys on our planet.

David will be eager to assist guests onboard with their own photography and will advise how to get the very best from your camera, however basic or specialised a model it may be. He will always be on hand to offer photographic tips and advice, be that choosing the correct settings or sharing ideas on how to capture stunning scenic and wildlife images.

The Falkland Islands will be the first destination of this voyage – a location renowned for its spectacular seabird colonies and abundant marine life.

South Georgia will undoubtedly be the wildlife highlight of this voyage and will probably provide the best opportunities for wildlife photography. Known as the ‘Galapagos of the South’, it is home to some enormous penguin colonies. Species include King Penguins, Gentoos, Adelie, Chinstrap, Magalennic and the beautiful Macaroni Penguin so-called because their colourful feathers make them look like the maccherones – ‘foolishly fashionable’ men of 18th century Italy.

South Georgia is also home to extensive colonies of Southern Elephant Seals, whose males can reach 6 metres in length and weigh in excess of 4 tonnes.  One of South Georgia’s most distinguished visitors is the Wandering Albatross, whose 3.5 metre wingspan is larger than any other bird. South Georgia is one of the most important nesting grounds for this albatross, whose numbers have been declining as they get caught on baited hooks set out by long line fishing boats.

The mountainous coastal scenery of South Georgia is the perfect inspiration for landscape photography. It is quite simply breathtaking and expresses the drama of Ernest Shackleton’s heroic crossing of the island on foot. Although South Georgia is 1,400 km from its nearest neighbour, Shackleton knew that its whaling communities provided his best chance of a rescue. The history of whaling in South Georgia, and of Shackelton himself, is very much part of the expert guidance that will be provided onboard this Antarctic voyage.

Antarctica will be the last location visited on this voyage: the largest untouched wilderness on our planet. The Peninsula is perhaps its most scenic part, characterised by its rocky mountains, islands, glaciers and icebergs, which can be marvelled at from the ship and in small inflatable craft.  Inflatables are often used to land amongst colonies of penguins and to get close to seals such as crab eaters, Weddell seals, and the predatory leopard seal.

This voyage will provide an ideal opportunity for both keen photographers and wildlife enthusiasts to see and keep a visual record of a once in a lifetime expedition to the Southern Ocean.
